A single sms message allows for up to and including 160 standard characters*, including spaces.
* The use of emoji's and unicode will affect character limits. Find out more about this here.
If you type more than 160 standard characters, this becomes a "multi-part" message, and each "part", including the first part, has a limit of 153 characters (7 characters are used by invisible headers and footers, indicating the part of the message being sent).
For example:
- Message "A" has exactly 160 standard characters = 1 credit
- Message "B" has 310 standard characters (153 + 153 + 4) = 3 credits
The following table provides a quick reference:
Standard characters | Credits charged |
1 - 160 | 1 |
161 - 306 | 2 |
307 - 459 | 3 |
460 - 612 | 4 |
613 - 765 | 5 |
766 - 918 | 6 |
919 - 1071 | 7 |
1072 - 1224 | 8 |
1225 - 1337 | 9 |
1338 - 1530 | 10 |
1531-1600 (limit) | 11 |
Once you have 161 standard characters or more, you will see your Credit Cost (per contact) increase (1),(2).
* The opt-out link is mandatory due to spam compliance, and contributes 29 standard characters, including spaces, to your character count.
What is the maximum character limit for an SMS campaign?
You can send a maximum of 1600 standard characters*, or 11 credits per contact, per campaign.
