A placeholder is a word or character string that allows you to include dynamic content within your emails.
With the use of placeholders, you can create an email and send it out to thousands of contacts, greeting each of them personally by name, or, in the case of an admin creating an email to send on behalf of their users, create one email template and have it dynamically change to reflect the details of each user as it sends to their contacts.
These quick and easy automations provide more personal touchpoints, and can greatly reduce the time required to send large quantities of emails.
Using the Placeholder dropdown
- Click on any panel that includes text to make it active.
- Start by typing in any preceding text, e.g: "Hello", or select the position for your placeholder.
- Within the text editing toolbar above the panel you will see Placeholder - click on this to see the options available to you, covered under the sub headings of:
- Contact: Uses data from the contacts in your database, e.g: First name, greeting.
- User: Uses data from user accounts, e.g: Name, title, licence number or contact number.
- Organisational Unit: Uses the settings for the office or groups account, e.g: Brand name, office name.
- and Custom Fields
- Select a placeholder, e.g: Contact: First name
Your panel will update and you will see the placeholder highlighted (1).
It's important to note that this is not how it will appear to your recipients.
To see how your email will look when sent, click Preview, and select View Preview.
* Not all placeholders will populate in a viewed or sent preview, e.g: Contact: First Name, as this placeholder needs to connect to a database (i.e: in a live send) to populate.
Using placeholders in other ways
As well as using the placeholder dropdown, you can use placeholders in your email subject, as a button link, or with hyperlinked text.
